Does a rubric need to go to college?

An excellent overview of rubric theory and practice. The title, however, implies a small controversy that the author is apparently addressing. Rubrics, while useful in some instances, particularly in grade school to help students to understand assessment levels, become less useful as pedagogical tools when students get older, and more useful as litigation defense tools. Rubrics have not 'gone to college' until more recently, simply because college students have traditionally been expected to know what constitutes quality work. The rubrics for writing papers included in this text are nice, especially for first year teachers, but my own fear is that the tool can, if overused or used in unnecessarily rudimentary ways, pander to students who fear working without hand-holding and 'structure'. The age-old question from college students asking the professor "What do you want?" should be answered with instructions that foster diversity, critical thinking, and independence. Ultimately, the question "What do I want?" should be the end game for a student's exploration and study.

Helpful tool.

Does the word "rubric" bring up bad memories? It did for me, but this book changed my mind. They can be a useful tool if crafted well and used appropriately. The author helps you do just that with examples and clear directions.
