This book is funny.

This book is funny, especially if you like British humor.

This book has been read and reviewed by so many people that I don’t feel the need to expound on my single profound philosophical opinion about it, as have many others. I like the way the parts of the story that should be taking place in the US still feel very British and I like how the Americans in England come off a bit simple. If you can’t appreciate a bit of national satire, then why bother reading a humorous book.

This book is pretty much one big collection of satires poking fun at: religion, Christianity specifically, occultism, politics, war, child rearing practices and more. Again, for those who don’t have a good sense of humor, this book will either offend or fly over their head.

I will say that the ending came together rather anticlimactic, considering all that happened to get there. Overall, though, it was an enjoyable ride. This book is listed as fantasy in most places and humor in others. I’d call this Paranormal Humor or Religious Satire but let’s be honest, most people wouldn’t pick up the latter because they’d never get passed the first word.

Recommended to adult readers who have a good sense of humor.

The end of the world was never funnier

This is one of the funniest books I have ever read. This has been one of the few books that I have enjoyed enough to buy for someone else as a gift. The story is a bit sacrilegious, so I wouldn't recommend it to a crazy religious relative, but for anyone who has an interest in the occult, but maybe not a serious investment in it.

This book is the story of the apocalypse. A demon, named Crowley (an ex-angel who didn't so much "fall" as saunter vaguely downwards), who actually really loves being on earth, is contacted to play his part in the birth of the Antichrist and to make sure he finds his appropriate home with a diplomat. (Think of the Omen). Unfortunately, Crowley really loves there being an earth and humans to "tempt" and living his (eternal) life. After accidentally misplacing the Antichrist, Crowley and his angel friend, Aziraphale (who owns a bookstore and equally loves living on earth) are on a mission to find him.

This book has an amazing cast of characters, including Adam (the Antichrist), his friends (a collective known as "Them") and his Hellhound (named Dog). The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse are joined by the slightly lesser known "Four Bikers of the Apocalypse." There are Witchfinders and a prophetess.

Also, it's Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett.

I read this book before I ever watched Supernatural, but I think any fan of Supernatural would enjoy this book. I like the blurred lines between Angel and Demon, and how Crowley and Aziraphale have such an amazing friendship, despite being on opposite sides of the Divine Plan. I like how they're on a Race Against The Clock, considering that the Rapture will be happening Next Sunday.

One last note... In the Forward, Gaiman and Pratchett write that Good Omens is the most repaired book in the world. When I went on vacation to New York City one summer, we had a mix-up with our rooms. I put our train tickets to get back from NYC in my copy of this book and put it in a cabinet. However, when we got back from sight-seeing, we had to move rooms and I forgot that I left this book in a cabinet. Low and behold, they gave our room to someone else who insisted that they didn't have my book (and our tickets) in there, and the book wasn't returned to the lost and found. We had to spend $100 to replace our tickets, but to this day, I still wonder who ended up with my copy of this book.

A new Favorite !

Why did it take me so long to buy and read this book? I asked myself that every couple of pages or so. I have been a long term fan of Terry Pratchett and while I haven't read much of Neil Gaiman, I loved what I have read. I have no idea why I didn't read this until now but if you are like me, you haven't read this, go get this book!

Pratchett's humor shines in this book, and Gaiman's gift of fantasy storytelling all creates a book that is exciting, riveting and slyly hilarious. The classic good vs evil is told in a fresh and funny way. If you are familiar with the Discworld books by Pratchett, you know that the absurd becomes the ordinary, and that is throughout the book.

Although the theme is serious, the end of the world, an angel and a demon, who while on opposite sides, suddenly find themselves in the middle of things. Things go wrong from the very beginning, when a simple baby swap goes wrong and the comedy of errors, including a hell hound delivery gone wrong in the most hilarious (and cute) way, begins. The book is a fast read, never boring and it will leave you wanting more.

About the Author

J. Keith Nisbett is an Associate Professor and Associate Chair of Mechanical Engineering at the Missouri University of Science and Technology. He has over 25 years of experience with using and teaching from this classic textbook. As demonstrated by a steady stream of teaching awards, including the Governor’s Award for Teaching Excellence, he is devoted to finding ways of communicating concepts to the students. He was awarded the BS, MS, and Ph.D. of the University of Texas at Arlington.

Richard G. Budynas is Professor Emeritus of the Kate Gleason College of Engineering at Rochester Institute of Technology. He has over 40 years experience in teaching and practicing mechanical engineering design. He is the author of a McGraw-Hill textbook, Advanced Strength and Applied Stress Analysis, Second Edition; and co-author of a McGraw-Hill reference book, Roark's Formulas for Stress and Strain, Seventh Edition. He was awarded the BME of Union College, MSME of the University of Rochester, and the Ph.D. of the University of Massachusetts. He is a licensed Professional Engineer in the state of New York.

It contains a TON of incredibly useful information. And thankfully it does a decent job ...

Shigley's is a go to text for mechanical engineers (and rightfully so). It contains a TON of incredibly useful information. And thankfully it does a decent job of explaining the material. I had two issues with it. First, it is so dense and not easy to read. Of course it's hard material but the authors made no attempts to make it a lighter read. Second, it fails to use units at times. This happened both in example problems and in equations. Sometimes it would give two different equations: one for us and one for SI, but you had to check carefully to make sure you're putting in the right units.

Informative, but not a stand-alone text

I purchased this book for my ENGM400: Mechanical Engineering Design class. I gained a lot from that class, but that was LARGELY due to a very experienced professor with excellent presentation abilities. This textbook is filled with useful information, but without a professional to explain how to use many of the concepts presented, it is nearly useless. Until you have been taught the purpose of various tables and charts, and guided through the methods of analyzing many of the problems contained inside, this book will only confuse you.

The book does provide many excellent examples, but unfortunately some of these are severely lacking in explanation, leaving you to puzzle over WHY the authors chose to solve problems the way they did; other problem types are completely missing a corresponding example and are just as confusing.

Obviously, if this textbook is a requirement for your class, reading this review won't persuade you not to buy it. To be honest, I would actually recommend buying it rather than borrowing or leasing, because once you have been instructed in its use it has a ton of helpful information and I have been using it for reference at my place of employment. However, don't expect to pick it up as something to read for knowledge without a course to accompany it.

Very informative if you're well-versed in technical literature. Paragraphs are very precise, but also very dense. This might make it difficult for the average engineering undergrad to get to the bottom of key concepts. I'd recommend this more as a reference for professionals who already have a background in the mechanics of machine elements rather than as a primary resource for students just learning the subject. The latter group may feel like this book makes things much more complicated than they really are.

Editor Bragg collects essays, speeches, articles, and short stories to provide an "authentic self-portrait of the American deaf community." The book's first section examines early social expressions about deafness: assumptions that it was associated with lack of intelligence, debates about genetics and intermarriage among deaf people, controversies about whether and how to educate the deaf. The collection proceeds with sections on American sign language, deaf education, deaf ethics, and the deaf community. Among the authors are advocates such as Edward Miner Gallaudet, founder of the university bearing his name, deaf playwright Shanny Mow, and a deaf silent film consultant; the latter two are among those who comment on changes in the images and employment of the deaf in the entertainment world and the role of nonverbal communication. Several writers explore such special problems as those of deafness among blacks, the struggle against racism, and bias against the disabled. Dan Benevento is a data visualization consultant and trainer with a passion for using healthcare data to save the world. A black belt in the use and application of Tableau, Dan has collaborated with IT teams at leading companies and organizations nationwide to build data bases and create hundreds of time-�saving, high-�impact reports and dashboards. His interactive dashboards and reports custom designed for leaders in all healthcare sectors have streamlined medical procedures, lowered costs, and made patients safer. The Tableau curriculum Dan designed and built shortens the learning curve for new practitioners, and ensures that current users stay up to date on data visualization best practices. Dan holds an A.B. in Social Studies from Harvard University. His passionate devotion to world-saving through healthcare data also extends to climbing cliffs, surfing waves, strumming guitars, and savoring fancy cheeses. High-quality, and not just for healthcare

I skipped this book (plus a stinker by Crofts) in my original round-up of Tableau titles - eight books in total - and would not want potential readers to repeat my mistake, expecting the book to be healthcare-specific, and not knowing how well-produced and visually attractive it is. Indeed, "Tableau for Healthcare" is the best-looking book out of the ten Tableau titles I have seen - "Tableau for Dummies" and "Tableau 9: The Official Guide" are nearly as pretty, the rest are not even close - and it is a very good Tableau introduction, on par with "Tableau for Dummies" and "Communicating Data with Tableau". If you are a Tableau beginner, these three books are the only ones you need to consider. Each one has a different style, so one's choice is a matter of personal preference: get all three, and see which one(s) you like.

PS. Should you consider doing Tableau certification, be warned: you have six months to take the exam. The warning is easy to miss - compared with that you get when taking a Qlik or Microsoft cert exam with Pearson VUE - and the exam's shelf life is half as long as Pearson's, as if missed deadlines (and free money for Loyalist, Tableau's no-name testing partner) were part of the business plan. I unwittingly missed the deadline - as it happens, by a single day - and was told to get lost by both Loyalist and Tableau. I have had a chance to observe Qlik's response to a similar customer request, and that was simply helpful; Tableau's, on the other hand, was North Korea meets Kafka. (Engage with Loyalist on behalf of some test taker? They cannot even be bothered to fix the errors in their sample exam). Don't get into this situation.

Very good book; would like to have seen more in ...

Very good book; would like to have seen more in depth discussion of calculated fields, level of detail, writing custom equations, and some of the thought processes surrounding view and function selections. For example, when is it better to use groups, over sets, over filters, etc.

A fine book...

This is a fine book. Here are some reasons why:

1. They book will walk you step by step as to what you need to do with regards to producing a viz. You will not be confused as of what to do.
~ In contrast another book that I am going through - not a Tableau book - says things like "Drag and drop X." and you are like "Okay. Where?" - because there are multiple places you can do that.

2. The book covers items that I have not (so far) seen elsewhere (e.g. the Table Lens, Deviation chart) and seems to be worth knowing.

3. The step-by-step walk through visuals are spot-on.
~ Again - you will not be confused as of what you are supposed to do next. Description and chart are supplied.

4. Overall aesthetics of the book are quite good. Its in full color. Techie books often are not like this.

5. The end of each chapter has this section titled HDVizoom where all the steps for everything you did within the chapter to create X or Y are laid. So if you need to review how to create something and don't want to go through the whole chapter... just go here. Very nice.

All that said, one minor knock against it.

1. Its terse. The book will tell you exactly what you need to know regarding something, like say what the blue and the green pills are but may not elaborate any additional bit on the why's of the pills. So you won't find say an excursus on this or that topic so if you are scratching your head wanting to know more... but then again this is Tableau for Healthcare so a bunch of the people that pick up this book might be physicians, nurses, pa's, etc., and they may not want to get bogged down in details that an IT guy might care about.

... which actually lead me to another pro with the book: This is about the healthcare world. It is about real world stuff. You are creating visuals that have to do with actual hospital stuff - you are not simply creating a chart of some generic store with widgets sold.

Dr. Comstock has extensive training in Relational-Cultural theory and has recently completed the Jean Baker Miller Training Institute's practioners program under the supervision of Judith Jordan, Ph.D.

If you are seeking depth in understanding diversity, this is a very preliminary text. It does provide a place to start but if you are looking for one text to provide breadth of knowledge about diversity, keep looking, this isn't it.

Randall M. Packard is the William H. Welch Professor and director of the Institute of the History of Medicine at Johns Hopkins University. Textbook, huge subject, misses a lot

This is a textbook which attempts to cover a huge subject so it misses a great deal and gives very little information on many things. E.g., it only mentions schistosomiasis in one sentence even though that was a devastating disease affecting hundreds of millions of people. The book would not do as a text in a course, it is incomplete.

Water has emerged as a key issue that could determine if Asia is headed toward cooperation or competition. The risk of water becoming a trigger for war or diplomatic strong-arming is especially high in Asia, which is home to three-fifths of the human population, yet has the lowest per capita freshwater availability among all continents. The world's fastest-growing demand for water for industrial and food production and household needs is in Asia, now the economic locomotive of the global economy and the scene of the most-rapid urbanization. More than half of the new additions to the world population by 2050 will be Asian, thereby accentuating the continent's water crisis. Indeed, the interconnected water, energy, and food sectors are set to come under growing strain.

The book covers the whole of Asia, stretching from Japan to the Middle East, and from Central Asia to the Indonesian archipelago. Intrastate and interstate water-sharing disputes have already become rife across Asia, where many watercourses cross national and ethnic frontiers. Measures taken by one nation or province to augment its water supply or storage capacity often adversely affect downstream basins, stoking political, ethnic, or sectarian tensions. Plans to reengineer river flows and overexploit transnational aquifers have only promoted the "securitization" of water. Once only an environmental issue, water has emerged as a major strategic issue.

The book, the product of almost five years of intense research, ranks as my most-challenging project ever. The challenge was compounded by the fact that different international institutions and agencies define Asia in different ways--some too narrowly to exclude entire subregions, such as the Afghanistan-Iran belt, the Caucasus, the Arabian Peninsula, and the Near East. In reality, Asia extends right up to the Bosphorus and includes more than two-thirds of the Russian Federation. Getting accurate data for the complete Asian continent thus became an important priority. In this interdisciplinary study, I received the unstinting support of many experts and institutions.

An Important Read

I consider this to be the most important book I read for geo-political information in 2011. Along with so many other issues folks are concerned about--terrorism, the Middle East, challenges with the European economies, the financial issues in the US, etc--water is one we often forget or fail to consider fully. While this is a very scholarly book and hardly 'light' reading, understanding these issues is vital to one's appreciating the problems with water, particularly as they relate to the way countries in Asia interact with one another and the rest of the world.

A Factually Revealing and Timely Book

This is an important and timely book that brings out facts about Asia that are little known -- that Asia is the world's driest continent; that Asia's water stress holds major economic, social and political implications; that of the 57 transboundary river basins in Asia, only a few have a water-sharing treaty among co-riparian states; that the Tibetan Plateau is the world's largest freshwater repository; and that China is accumulating hydro-leverage against its neighbors by building mega-dams that can control river flows from Tibet and Xinjiang to other countries.

The book is truly a pioneering and multidisciplinary study. It stands out for its easy-to-read style and thorough, unbiased research. In fact, it is the first book to look at water security across Asia, a continent that could shape our future world.

It highlights the importance of building water institutions to avert inter-country or intra-country conflicts at a time when water disputes have become rife in Asia. It lays importance on protecting the interests of vulnerable communities, as well as countries like Vietnam, Bangladesh, Kazakhstan and Iraq that are located farthest downstream on international rivers. And it offers concrete ideas and suggestions on how to solve or contain the growing water wrangles within and between nations.

An India-centric perspective on Asia's regional water challenges

Brahma Chellaney is one of India's foremost strategic analysts. This book is a sign of the growing attention to the links between national security and water.

Knowledge on water policy and politics comes from two main sources. First, the vast (and repetitive) outpouring of academic and activist claims, which seldom have much to do with what actually happens on the ground. Second, the actual practice of water policy and politics, most of which is not written down but the core skill of practitioners. (As a wise water diplomat once said "Researchers don't practice and practitioners don't read".) Chellaney draws heavily on the first set of sources for his sections on other countries; and draws heavily on the second when dealing with India and its perspectives.

This contributes to a heavily-distorted lens through which Chellaney views the water challenges of the Himalayas. When dealing with internal challenges in other countries Chellaney paints a picture which exists in Google but bears little relation to reality on the ground. When dealing with international water issues, Chellaney's message is the standard one from a paternalistic and sometimes xenophobic Delhi. At the core stands benevolent, democratic India. "Munificent" India struggles nobly to do good with and for its neighbours. But it has to deal with "reckless China", "jihadi Pakistan" and "immature Bangladesh".

The book is thus of considerable interest -- not because it presents a balanced view, but because it presents a well-crafted view of the way in which New Delhi sees the water world around it.
