Very Helpful Book

I found this book to be extremely helpful in working through the complex rules of ASCE 7-98. The authors selected examples which introduce some of the pitfalls that are common in apply the standards provisions. I used the book to validate an excel spreadsheet for Wind calculations, and I only found a couple of minor errors in the entire book.

The battle of greed versus emotion...well-written and compelling.

Having spent the majority of my career working in the nonprofit field, it's hard for me to fathom the unbelievable excesses that those in the business world took advantage of in the mid-2000s, until the economy tanked. It sounds similar to the "greed is good" philosophy that pervaded the 1980s, and much as during that era, those who rose the highest often fell the hardest.

In Ioannis Pappos' Hotel Living, Stathis Rakis flees his seemingly ordinary life in a small Greek village to pursue college and a career in San Francisco, and then decides to attend a prestigious business school in Paris to obtain his MBA. It is there that he befriends a number of privileged expatriates from all over the world, whose lives of profligate spending and entitlement amaze him (while causing him some amount of envy), and he is a bit of a paradox to his friends. During graduate school, Stathis also falls—hard—for Eric, a liberal journalist with a strong social conscience despite his own privileged upbringing.

After graduation, Stathis takes a high-paying job as a management consultant, and finds himself spending the bulk of his time living in hotels, building relationships with the hotel staff, and moving from city to city as his job warrants it. When he isn't working, he's pining for Eric and trying to figure out where he fits in Eric's life, all the while both loving him madly and being angered by Eric's philosophy of the world. As their relationship waxes and wanes, Stathis fills his minimal amount of spare time uneasy in the social spotlight, trying to salve his emotional turmoil with copious amounts of drugs and alcohol. And his downward spiral is fueled by his heart, his greed, his ambition, and his conscience.

I found this book thanks to an ad on Goodreads (the cover blurb by Michael Cunningham caught my eye), and I found it tremendously well-written, part social commentary on this culture of excess and wanton lust and addiction, and part an emotional chronicle of a man who can't seem to overcome heartbreak, someone unable to return to the world he knows but not-quite-comfortable with the world he lives in. Ioannis is a fascinating, immensely flawed character, and his crises are painful to read about but compelling at the same time.

I could have done with a little more character building and interpersonal relationships in the book and less with the extensive details about the work that Stathis and his friends did, and at times the book introduced so many characters at once it was hard to discern who was whom, but Pappos created a fascinating look at a world that many got to experience, while not many came out unscathed. Stathis is a complex character I can't get out of my head, and I'd love to know if Pappos has given any thought to what came next for him.

Thoughtful, intense, and authentic.

Now here’s an incredible tale… of obsession, of class, of seeking, of losing, and maybe of finding. Told from Page 1 by a writer in masterful control of language and tone, Pappos’ novel about his decade as an up-and-coming consultant at Command (a fictional consulting firm) came on like the rush of a fast flood, sweeping me into the story with barely time to catch my breath. His sentences are compact, his descriptions succinct... telling without being overblown... exactly enough to let me, as a reader, find the fullness of what's being told. My mind felt very awake taking this novel in.

At times hilarious, at other times wicked, 'Hotel Living' is always entertaining. I’m often surprised how some writers have a 'great ear' for dialog — and Iannos Pappos is one of them. And he has an uncanny knack for remembering it, getting down all the elision and cadence of real conversation. Of course, 'Hotel Living' is full of zingers and sharp verbal exchanges. But it's all told in dense, smart writing that felt natural to the way people talk and the way the characters were as individuals. Authentic.

Edmund White likens this book to Trollope’s “The Way We Live Now.” Others compare it to “The Wolf of Wall Street.” For me, Pappos’ writing conjured up Hemingway’s “The Sun Also Rises.” A raw, intense story built around a figure I didn’t necessarily love (at first) or understand but nevertheless pulled me in, made me believe, made me care. Wonderful all the way.

A mesmerizing read full of suspense, insider trading, love, hopes, disappointments, desires, drugs, ups and downs of a life that may sound unreal at times yet you suddenly find yourself in "Stathis" at the most unexpected moment .... I could not drop it from my hand once I started and didn't want it to end. Recommend it to everyone.

Exactly what you need

It's a great book for a guide when you are writing a report. It goes in great detail everything you should consider when writing a report. Sometimes it can get a little confusing in how you have to read a paragraph, not know what they are referring to and then read the example below it to understand the previous paragraph explaining what was going on. This breaks my train of thought, and often I have to read the example and re-read the previous paragraph to understand what they are trying to discuss.

About the Author

Dr Peggy Mason's love of science gained an early start as a child taxidermist in Washington, DC. She received her BA in Biology (1983) and PhD in Neuroscience from Harvard University in 1987 and completed her post-doctoral training in Neurology at UCSF in 1991. She is currently a Professor of Neurobiology at the University of Chicago. She is committed to teaching neurobiology to anyone that will listen and has won multiple awards for her teaching of medical students at the Pritzker School of Medicine. She is the inaugural director of the Neuroscience program at the University of Chicago College. Comprehensive. Superb illustrations and photos. Clear, understandable text. I bought this because I was so impressed with her MOOC on this subject at Coursera.Org. As a lay person, I found her MOOC to be clear without this text (nor is the text required). A lay person buying this book, without seeing her course would probably have difficulty: primarily because there is so much detail and material, it's hard to absorb (let alone retain) without knowing which are the the more important vs less important aspects (i.e., a structure [which the course provides]). In fact, this book is so well written and illustrated, I find it amazing that it doesn't cost ten times as much (but I know nothing about the publishing industry). Maybe they are losing money on it.

Fascinating Look at French Medieval Chivalry

French Chivalry is superb. I have always enjoyed reading medieval history, and I have accepted that many texts are detailed and scholarly and require substantial effort by the reader.
Well-researched and documented, French Chivalry is an exception. Anyone with a modicum of interest in the Middle Ages will have difficulty putting this book aside. Historian Sidney Painter writes with an engaging style that is both informal and scholarly. I read all 172 pages in two days.
Painter has created a uniquely fascinating examination of French chivalry, contrasting the chivalric ideal with the actual practice of chivalry by French knights from about 1000 to the mid-1400s.
There are only five chapters. The first chapter, The Nobles of France, portrays the French ruling class at the end of the first millennium as little more than undisciplined warriors. Painter examines the political, economic, and military factors that influenced the development of that remarkable code of behavior that we call chivalry.
In chapter 2, Feudal Chivalry, Painter explores the ideals of chivalry that were most readily acceptable to French knights themselves - prowess in battle, loyalty, generosity, knightly courtesy, and love of glory.
Chapter 3 (Religious Chivalry) and 4 (Courtly Love) describe how churchmen and ladies created and advanced their own distinct and rather contradictory conceptions of the perfect nobleman. Despite persistent efforts, the ethical ideals propagated by the ecclesiastical class met with limited success. The ladies did, however, persuade the warrior class to direct more attention away from the battlefield.
The final chapter examines how the three somewhat mutually exclusive types of chivalry were reconciled. This story ends as the warrior knight is transformed into (or replaced by) the courtier, a man more concerned with entertaining and pleasing royalty than exhibiting prowess in battle.

Requires some selective reading, but thought provoking

As the introduction indicates, skip the first chapter unless you really know nothing of the Middle Ages. Besides being dated and intensely opinionated the chapter contains sweeping generalizations with no support and factual errors, particularly regarding armor. Later chapters are much improved. Sources are noted (though they could use more variety) and statements of opinion, which are numerous, are generally noted in the first person.

Despite these issues, French Chivalry has much to offer. It's a great overview of a number of sources, and takes an easily comprehended view of chivalry from the perspectives of the church, proponents of courtly love, and from knights themselves. It's a good introduction to the topic, being more accessible than Maurice Keen's excelent work "Chivalry."

Funny, thoughtful, profound, and surprisingly enjoyable for a book about dead bodies

Having read Mary Roach’s newest book, Grunt, in which she talks about the science of keeping soldiers alive, I decided to read her first one, Stiff, for two reasons. One was to see how much she’d changed as an author, but two – and the bigger reason – was a fascination with the subject. Stiff‘s subtitle is The Curious Lives of Human Cadavers, and the book is about exactly that: what happens to our remains after we die? Like she did with Grunt (and, I’m presuming, all of her books), Roach divides the book into independent chapters, each focusing on different aspects. There’s the bodies that end up in mortuary schools, as well as those that end up dissected by medical students. There are cadavers used as crash testers, those that end up at the Body Farm (where decay is studied, among other things), those that are used to help understand airplane crashes…and those that were used to understand what happened to Jesus and others who were crucified. And there’s much more to be found here, including bodies as compost, as art, and more.

It’s a fascinating subject, and one that put Roach on the map – and having read the book, it’s not hard to see why. Done wrongly, the book could seem insensitive, ghoulish, or just depressing. But Roach celebrates these cadavers, reminding the reader just how much has been gained from this research and just how important these bodies have been to not only medicine, but to our society as a whole. At the same time, she never shies away from the discomfort people feel; indeed, one of the most compelling threads in each chapter is discussing with the various people she meets how they manage to maintain a proper emotional balance when they’re working with the dead all the time.

Roach is more of a presence in Stiff than she is in Grunt; it feels like more of a first book, and something she might grow away from as she went. But that also feels like a key part of why the book works; after all, death is a fundamentally personal event, and there’s little way to read Stiff and not spend time thinking about what you would want done with your own remains, be it cremation, burial, donation, or more. And Roach builds her own debate into the book, concluding the book with a chapter that finds her pondering what to do with her own remains, having done all these studies and researches into our possible fates.

But lest that sound too heavy, Stiff is every bit as engaging and fun as you would hope from Roach’s reputation. Her digressive footnotes and odd asides are still evident, her willingness to ask questions no less charming, and her ability to bring a light tone to even heavy subject matters no less welcome. More than that, she finds depth and thoughtfulness to discuss beyond what you would expect, to the point where you get the impression that she could write a whole second book about bodies and never run out of things to say. That she does all this while being incredibly informative, demonstrating a gift for conveying complex things quickly, and managing to even tell stories, is just testament to her skills as a writer, and the deservedness of her reputation.

Terrific Book

Mary Roach is my favorite non fiction author and this is the first book I read by her. I completely devoured it in just 2 days. it perfectly balances the absurdity of the facts and well as the myths. it draws the readers attention to the humor in something as somber as death. I learned a lot from this book and it's one of my favorite reads. each chapter focuses on a different aspect of death from the scientific standpoint. it's full of facts, fallacies, and there's even pictures. if I could give it a sixth star, I would

Could Not Put It Down!

I Love, Love, Love this book! I cannot speak highly enough about this one. I loved it so much I bought the book, bought a second copy for a friend and got it on kindle. I loved all the history behind the story, her amazing research, and humor she was able to bring to such a serious subject matter. It made me think about my own body and what I want to do with it once I leave my earthly home for my Heavenly one. Right now I am down to donating to science and The Body Farm. If you have a curious mind, and want to read something intriguing, odd, and well written, this is the book for you. I could not put it down!

About the Author
Marilyn Z. Gaston began her professional performing career before and after graduation with a B.F.A. in Ballet/Theatre from Texas Christian University. During her undergraduate years she danced with the Fort Worth Ballet and Casa Manana Summer Musicals, Inc., then went on to become a member of the Atlanta Ballet Company and following that, was a fully-contracted company member of the state theatre ballet companies of Germany: in Lubeck, and Karlsruhe, Germany, and did a 40-performance tour also of Romeo & Juliet with the Ballet du Rhin company of Strasbourg, France. She later also danced with the professional company of The Maryland Ballet when it was headquartered in Baltimore. Upon returning to the U.S. from Europe, Ms. Gaston began teaching at universities, private dance schools and pre-professional studios. In 1981 she founded the Ballet Academy of Baltimore and the Ballet Concerto of Baltimore, now known as The Baltimore Ballet, and continued in that capacity for 17 years. She served on the dance faculties of Towson University, Goucher College, Loyola College (Baltimore), Tyler Jr. College (Tyler, Tx., as director of dance) and Rollins College (Florida), among others. She returned to complete an M.F.A. in Dance from 2009-2012 at the University of Oklahoma on a teaching fellowship. Her past students have been accepted into many college dance programs, pre-professional schools, and into professional dance companies. In 2008 Ms. Gaston also completed an M.F.A. in Creative Writing at Queens University of Charlotte. She currently has two fiction books also in publication, under the author name "M. Z. Gaston." She continues to teach ballet in Florida.

Essential Ballet Teaching Textbook/Handbook

This is a book every ballet teacher should have on hand, even if they've been teaching for years. The insights into the different age groups and what's appropriate for each, and the very detailed lesson plans would be incredibly helpful in upgrading any ballet program. New teachers should be given this book to introduce them to the concept of teaching through progressions, with an emphasis on building technique safely and correctly as the title suggests. Parents would find this very helpful in evaluating potential studios and teachers for their child. I highly recommend it! I hope this author will write a companion book perhaps specifically for dancers.

A straightforward adaptation of a weak story

The television story upon which this book is based was written by Terry Nation, who a couple of months earlier got the great British public to tune in compulsively to watch his Dalek serial. While this Dalek story firmly established Doctor Who as a favourite in the hearts of the public, it is rather sad to see that his second script was a cliche-ridden story that might just as well have been a Flash Gordon serial (no offence to Flash Gordon fans, but the ideal stories for the two characters are very different!).
The TARDIS arrives on the island Marinus, where the crew are captured but later convince the Keeper of the Conscience of Marinus that they are not saboteurs - unlike the Voord, who they help the Keeper to overcome. Arbitan, the Keeper, sets the travellers on a quest to obtain the microcircuit keys that control the Conscience, a computer that governs the world and eliminates feelings of evil, so that it can be reset to also influence the Voord.
Each key is hidden in a location which the travellers must explore to find it, overcoming a variety of perils. Unfortunately, even for 1964 when this story was broadcast, the perils are old hat as are the ways in which the travellers overcome them.
Philip Hinchcliffe's novelisation is quite workmanlike, but given the paucity of the original story can't do too much to rise it out of the ranks of mediocrity in which it rightly belongs.

Not as good as the TV episodes...

The Keys of Marinus is one of the best First Doctor adventure. I love the details, the sense of a quest, the feeling of danger towards a whole planet. Too bad that does not come out in the novel form of the story. It lacks the feeling of detail, the complex characters, the whole feeling of a epic story has been tossed out the window.
