'Bugs' Bendell joined the Royal Air Force in 1953 just as the service was converting to jets. His career spanned 34 years and in that time he became on of the best fighter pilots of his generation.

He racked up more than four thousand hours in aircraft as varied as the Tiger Moth, the Harvard, the T33, the Vampire, the Hunter and the Mach-2 capable Lightning, Republic's F105 and the Phantom F4. His distinguished flying career encompassed the foremost interceptors and ground attack aircraft of the day. It was the time of massive technological advance; from subsonic, cannon armed fighters to supersonic, multirole jets loaded with missiles, computers and radar. NEVER IN ANGER is full of the excitement and risks of flying some of the world's most famous fast jets..

Bendell's career took him to Canada, Germany, North Africa, Cyprus and, in a remarkable testament to his skill as a pilot, to the USA where he instructed American pilots on the F105.

It was while serving on detachment with a Phantom squadron in Norway in 1970, that he began to experience loss of his sense of touch and bouts of exhaustion. Some eight years later after presenting more serious symptoms including double vision, partial paralysis and lack of co-ordination, he was eventually diagnosed as having multiple sclerosis. He was forced to retire in 1987.

Like thousands of other men who served in Britain's armed forces over these years, Bendell's story is one of quiet endeavour and extraordinary achievement. But it is also a story of personal courage in the face of a debilitating disease.

Very readable and interesting. Bugs shown with Mach 2 F-105 "Thud" a plane he instructed in during an exchange tour with USAF. Full of exceptional experiences like emergency landing at super-secret area 51 (without any pocket ID) and seeing the SR-71 Blackbird when it was still a major secret. CIA didn't release him for three days and then only with an officer's personal pledge he would not reveal the secret to his own government. More than one pilot has said Bugs was the finest pilot and moreover the finest officer and gentleman they've known. He was RAF's version of our Blue Angel/Thunderbird solo demonstration pilot in the RAF Electric Lightning. Bugs trained dozens of USAF pilots in the Thud who went on to fly combat missions over North Vietnam. I loaned my hardback copy to pilot friends who passed it around to their friends via USPO with each shipment insured for $600 which was the going price on eBay. If you have the slightest interest in aviation, the military, or just incredible personal journeys; you will be glad you read Never In Anger.

A Great Personal History of a Remarkable Cold War Pilot

This book gives a very personal perspective of the cold war and a pilot's career all the way up to leaving the service on disability. I particularly enjoyed reading about the author's deployments to Germany and his interesting parrot-like attempts of speaking the German language. The amusements of operational squadron life such as wacky squadron parties also greatly amused me.

Overall it was a thoroughly enjoyable read. However, having read about all those personal experiences, the book did leave me with the distinct wish that the book's author did not suffer from such a debilitating disease. I wish him all the best in his continued struggle against MS.

Good book on VHDL Synthesis

This book is excellent for the topic - logic sythesis. It has an introduction to VHDL, however I found that "VHDL Starters Guide" was better if you are just starting off. However at any rate this is a good book on VHDL. There is a lot of examples in the book, which makes it easy to understand and use. It does have a focus on sythesis, with such topics of optimizing your code using different tecniques. It also talks about good coding of VHDL. If you know at least some VHDL and are interested in synthesising your designs, this book should be useful for you.

Good and Clear explanation of the main points

I'm a CS student and needed to know more about VHDL for a project. I looked at a range of books and found some of them way too deep for me. This one seemed clearly written and had lots of neat examples.
What I liked best was that the books show 3 different ways fo designing circuits. I learnt a lot about VHDL design styles from that
There were some mistakes in the code (eg bit-width ofa circuit vaired from 4 to 5 bits in different parts of the code) but thats about it

Nice, but not necessary

What I got is 'Medieval Garments Reconstructed: Norse Clothing Patterns', the "companion" book to 'Woven into the Earth: Textile finds in Norse Greenland', which is an expansion of Poul Norlund's work in which he summed up the excavation, in a 1920s book.
So I have a copy of the original, and the we-have-better-technology-to-do-this 'Woven' book, and now 'Medieval Garments Reconstructed'.
I don't really need this third book, which is just a graphing out of patterns, as I have been doing the same thing since I read Norlund's original book, back in the 80s.
But this book does stand on its own, without the other books. It has some nice, and large, pictures of the original garments, and then their reconstructions (right down to hand spinning the same type of yarn, and weaving it the same way, and sewing it the same way, reconstructions!) I do have to admire the people who undertook this great research, as there is no way I could have ever had the space or time, to do this. They even make recommendations about where to get the wool from the same type of sheep that were there in Greenland. The type of combs that were used are shown, and there are clear pictures of floor standing looms, and a discussion of weights, etc.
They do talk about finishing edges, even braiding cords, making buttons, and give diagrams.
And the graphs of those patterns which can help people who don't want graph out patterns on their owns - you can easily blow theirs up, make a mockup, and then tweak to your size and shape. A lot of us just do that ourselves, but I do know how daunting somethings are without a pattern. And that is the purpose of this companion book, to give those graphed patterns.
There is lots of white space in this book, around pictures, and on different pages.
It isn't really necessary to get this book, if you have 'Woven', and have been doing this anyway. But I didn't know that until I got it, and the pictures are very large and sharp.
IF you don't have 'Woven", then this book stands on its own, and would be very helpful.

Something's missing...

I purchased this title not realizing it was a companion book to another, and it would have been a great stand-alone book for costume researchers and recreationists if it had not forgotten one important thing...dates. Not a single garment is dated in the entire volume. Now I'll have to do more research to find out what century each of these garments are from in order to make a complete outfit from one time period. I like that they have full color pictures of the extant piece and the reconstructed pieces side by side, along with some great details about the original weave and color of the fabrics used.

Wonderful to find this wealth of information easily available.

While this book is missing a few things to stand alone, such as dates, It is the perfect companion to "Woven Into The Earth." The garments are refereed to by their numbers, which makes cross refencing fairly easy. I can find a garment in this book, see the original, see the reporduction, read the exact measurements of the original and it's fabric content. I am then given a graphed pattern to follow which shows shaded which parts of the pattern are actual remnants of the original garment and which are the interpretations and filling in of missing fabric. It makes it easy to see exactly what I am looking at. I can then look the garment number up in "Woven Into The Earth" and find more informaiton, such as when and where the garment was unearthed, and in some cases even the specific location on a map of Greenland where it was found. All in all this book is a real gem and it is detailed enough for true historic reproductions as well as easy enough to follow for the weekender reenactor. A great book!

A book to get you a real, working physics engine.

Let's first say that I've seen my fair share of physics literature. I've pored over papers, tutorials, etc. with little to show beyond some simple collisions between spheres. What I really wanted to implement was something ideally "not" much more difficult: a rigid body simulation with simple primitives (spheres, boxes, planes) that collide and interact with each other, giving a realistic enough feel to build a game around.

Unfortunately, even this idea is extremely complex and difficult to implement. You would think the math and code would be fairly easy, and it actually is (depending on your math background. A few semesters of college calculus and physics is very helpful, but not required). But programming a physics engine is 40% math and physics and 60% being clever enough to get the computer to do what you want. Floating point errors, inaccuracies in integration and bugs you can't even imagine from the start all mess with your beautiful equations.

And this is where the author, Ian Millington, saves the day with this great book. All throughout, he lays down the challenges of building a physics engine and gives you realistic solutions that are explained very well. You build from the ground up: from a simple particle engine, to a mass aggregate physics engine, all the way to a full blown physics engine. Each chapter he describes what algorithms you need to implement and variations on those algorithms, providing pros and cons for each. I cannot TELL you how fantastic it feels to have an author tell you in an honest tone: here's where this works, here's where it doesn't. Never at any time do you feel that things are being hid behind a curtain of intellect and egomania. And if the author does hide any details, he tells you and with good reason.

In the end, if you plow through all 20 chapters with diligence and fortitude, you're going to end up with a working physics engine. It will be a physics engine capable of a lot of very cool things, but it isn't a finished product. And the author makes it very clear throughout the book that you will not end up with a spit polished physics engine to compete with the likes of Havok. It will be rough on the edges with plenty of room for improvement, but it gets the job done. The author helps you create a working model and leaves you with many options on how to improvement. However, those options require much more advanced coding.

This book provided me with exactly what I was looking for: the know-how and experience to create a physics engine for the everyday game designer. I highly recommend it. If you want to create something commercial, this is a great start, but you're going to have to buy some heavier books on top of this one if you want a very robust, optimized engine.

Great book to get a basic physics engine off the ground

Overall a great book that enabled me to easily understand the basics of getting a physics engine off the ground. Obviously the physics engine you end up with will be no Source or CryEngine, but it will be enough to produce an indie game. One thing I love about this author is he focuses on code rather than math. This book isn't a college course in physics, it's all about applying the most important laws of physics for simulations in games and it's all about code. Overall, I was satisfied with the physics engine I got out of it. The one thing I will say to potential buyers is that this is NOT the only book you will need if you want to make a physics engine. You will also need a book on collision detection, bounding volume construction, and spacial partitioning algorithms. This book gives a brief overview, but it only touches the surface. I would recommend "Real Time collision detection" by Ericson and "Mathematics for 3D game programming" by Lengyel as supplemental references.

Good intro to building an engine

Gives a full tour through building a working physics engine, so it's really useful if you're getting started. However, it may feel a bit slow if you have a physics background, as this is intended at a more introductory level. The author hints at more advanced topics, such as alternative collision resolution techniques and optimization techniques, but doesn't go into detail. That said, the book does give a fully working engine, which counts for a lot.

Overall a solid foundation, but you may want to supplement with more advanced materials.

Excellent first book about space...

What a GREAT book! I was looking for a book for my 3 1/2 year old that would introduce him to space in a simple way, "What's Out There" is exactly what I wanted. He is so captivated by this book, it is short, simple and easy to understand. It is perfect for him now and will be for the next several years. All of the basics are covered such as the 9 planets and their relation to the sun, how the earth travels around the sun and spins, the moon, gravity, the make-up of all the planets, asteroids etc. Each topic is explained in a fun and easy way for a child to understand and the illustrations are wonderful. Highly recommend as a first book about space!

A little too grown-up for toddlers with short attention spans.

At first, I read the reviews and thought it would be suitable for a younger toddler (not school aged) and then when it came home, I realized this book might be a little advanced for a younger reader ( mine is 3). Little boys especially, may be interested in space but they also have short attention spans and anything more than a sentence or two will not keep young toddlers interested the way a shorter, more kid-friendly book would. My toddler gets tired of the words halfway through and just turns the pages and looks at the pictures. And that is how he "reads" the book.

Despite the wordy and somewhat grown-up-level references ( theres a page that talks about how constellations were named etc. Irrelevant.) the book seems to be a favorite of my sons right now, particularly because we've introduced him to astronomy. I always loved having space and astronomy material growing up and I can only speak for myself as I was a child and I preferred more pictures and facts in my books.

Little children tend to want interesting stories or a challenge (think puzzles or hands -on approach) to keep them interested. This book did not have a story nor was it a picture book. Nonetheless, it is a good book to teach about space but it will require more involvement in order to teach your child about what really is "out" there.

The pictures are kid friendly but they tend to lean more towards a page layout of space with some pictures relevant to the words written. If you are looking for a richer book with many many pictures of planets, black holes, etc then this is not it. It is somewhat boring for a toddler as far as activity level and captivating pictures go.

But for the price, it cant be beat. Especially with the knowledge that is given throughout the pages.

If you have a toddler that will sit still (mine wont.ever) or you have an inquisitive older toddler this is perfect.

Nonetheless, it is a good book to have in your childs space library.

Adorable and informative even for a 3 year old!

This is a GREAT book! Goes into alot of detail about the solar system but still keeps it entertaining for kids! My husband is into astronomy and we want my daughter to have an interest too. She loved saying the names of the planets! VERY cute!!
